"How long have you been allowing procrastination and perfectionism to keep you from your creative work?"

'How to Overcome Procrastination and Perfectionism!'

Dear Fellow Artists and Writers,

Does this sound familiar?

Scenario #1 - The Laundry Becomes Urgent Just When It's Time to Create

When you come to the time you've set aside for your creative work...assuming you've actually scheduled the time, but that's a different story...does some other activity come up that you absolutely have to do before your work. My personal favorite was always the laundry. It didn't matter how long that pile of dirty clothes had been sitting there, it became an urgent concern the minute I was supposed to go to work. Hum...what's wrong with this picture?

So what's your favorite "urgent" actiivity? Laundry? Walking the dog? Plucking your eyebrows? Making the bed even though it only matters when your creative work is waiting for you? Or do you have another favorite? We've all got them.

Scenario #2 - Lots of Projects Started, but None of Them are Finished

If that scenario doesn't sound familiar maybe this one does. You get into a project feeling inspired and excited, but you never seem to finish it. You have dozens of these projects hanging around, but none of them seem quite good enough to finish.

How many unfinished projects do you have hanging around? How many shelves in the basement are loaded with pieces you haven't finished, but can't let go of?

Scenario # 3 - You Keep Reworking the Same Piece Until You Ruin It

Or do you keep reworking a piece until you ruin it. Julia Cameron talks about erasing the drawing until the paper rips. How many projects have you ruined or just plan never gotten back to once the initial excitement wore off.

How many times have you ruined a piece because you reworked it to death? How many times in the past year? Or have you just given up?

If you're like most of the artists and writers I know, you have more than a passing familiarity with these scenarios. Am I right?

Trust me, you're not alone. Perfectionism and procrastination are the two most common blocks facing artists and writers. I have the emails to prove it.

No matter which scenario fits, even if they all fit, I am willing to bet, you continually beat yourself up about it.

And around and around you go feeling like you're continually chasing your own tail, and never accomplishing what you want to accomplish.

I would like to suggest that there are valid reasons for putting off your creative work, and there are equally valid reasons why you never feel your creative work is good enough to finish.

Yes, there are VALID reasons for procrastination and perfectionism!

Just because there are valid reasons doesn't mean you have to suffer the consequences for the rest of your life. There are ways to overcome procrastination and perfectionism, but beating yourself into submission is not one of them.

Don't you think it's time to stop beating yourself up?

This isn't the usual...just suck it up and get over it approach. The root causes are too complex for that, and all those people who have been telling you to suck it up are just dead wrong.

What's needed is compassion, understanding and concrete actions. And that's what I plan to deliver.
